Mmmmmmmmmm, "The Smell of Quality!"
What’s Happening at the Coop!
The past coffee season has proven to be one full of surprises for
all our farmers and harvesters with QUALITY being a priority, as
with our crop coming on now, QUALITY ALWAYS NO. 1 !
Pruning, plucking , weed control and fertilizing has been done
to assist the trees in preparation for the best of the best crop
yet to come for the 2011-2012 coffee season. Some of the farmers
have also been putting in place the broca traps to help with the
control of the BROCA beetle.
Even with the less than typical rainfall to set the flowers during
blossoming & with the new battle against the CBB (Broca) we
are planning & hoping for a fruitful season. The coffee crop
year of 2012-2013 officially starts off with our first bags of coffee
cherry to be delivered as early as July 2012.
As you drive through the different coffee regions of Kona, from
mauka (upper) to makai (lower) you can witness the many coffee trees
in different stages of growth and development. Some will have flower
buds, flowers, and developing green cherry on them at the same time.
As the buds begin flushing, known as the Kona Snow, these flowers
fill the air with a scent of jasmine.
With the onset of the developing green coffee, and the different
ripening stages of the coffee cherry the farmers know that the 2011-2012
coffee crop is here again, and it will soon be time to pick the
fields.
